How to host a sundae bar for 6โ€“12 people

October 15, 2026 ยท 4 min read

A sundae bar is the easiest crowd-pleaser there is: guests build their own, and you get to enjoy the party. Here's how to set one up without a melted mess.

How much ice cream do you need?

Plan on two scoops per guest, plus a few extra for second rounds. A 16 oz pint gives roughly four to five scoops, so for 10 guests you'll want five pints. Offer two or three flavors: one classic (vanilla), one chocolate and one wildcard.

The toppings checklist

  • Crunchy: chopped nuts, crushed cookies, toasted coconut, granola
  • Sweet: sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, mini marshmallows
  • Fruity: sliced strawberries, cherries, banana coins (added last so they don't brown)
  • Saucy: hot fudge, caramel, strawberry sauce, plus whipped cream

A lidded four-cell caddy keeps toppings covered until guests arrive and makes clean-up a one-trip job.

Keep everything cold

  • Chill bowls in the freezer for 15 minutes before serving.
  • Keep pints in the freezer and bring out one or two at a time.
  • If your freezer runs very cold, move the next pint to the fridge for 5โ€“10 minutes before it's needed so it's ready to scoop.

A serving flow that works

Set the table up in order: bowls โ†’ ice cream โ†’ sauces โ†’ toppings โ†’ whipped cream โ†’ spoons and napkins. Have one person on scoop duty. With CreamGlide, preheat once, scoop a round, and park it on its drip rest between guests so it's not rolling around the table.

Charge your scoop in the afternoon. It doesn't heat while plugged in, so you'll want it ready before the doorbell rings.
